Afrika Tikkun, one of South Africa’s leading NGOs, founded by Jewish business figure Bertie Lubner, supports numerous areas of need, including education. The recent launch of a new initiative, called Bamba Learn, is geared to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of children in the Plettenberg Bay area.

Bamba Learn is an initiative of the Bambanani programme, a project that has been incorporated into Afrika Tikkun’s outreach initiatives and which focuses on Early Childhood Development (ECD). Theresa Michael, co-founder of the Bambanani programme, explains that, “Afrika Tikkun Bambanani represents the joining of Afrika Tikkun and Bambanani Sifunde. This move has allowed us to produce a significant cohort of 1 500 ECD specialists who implement a standardised ECD curriculum in rural underprivileged schools.”

Recently, the Bamba Learn educational app was launched for the community of Bitou (Plettenberg Bay). The venue for the launch was the Sabrina Love Farm, opened by Tony and Suzy Lubner, a facility that brings quality education, therapy and support to disabled children.

Designed in the form of a game, the app has been recognised for its outstanding pedagogy and as an educational innovation of quality. Recognising its potential to reach millions of children, the app was selected by the Mastercard Foundation for its potential to scale across Africa.

Theresa explains that the app is geared to provide all children, regardless of their background, with access to high-quality education. Already tested among children, the app is showing significant positive results with improvements among the children of 40-50%
in key learning outcomes.

The launch of the app introduces a new era for ECD in the Bitou community. It also highlights the commitment of the Lubner family to providing interventions to enhance the lives of the children of our country.
