“This programme is changing the world one child at a time” – Educator, Essenhout Primary
The SA Jewish Museum is an important bridge between the Jewish community and broader South African society.
When children and adults from South African schools and NGOs visit the museum, they are not just participating in a museum programme – for many of them, this is their first meeting with Jews and the Jewish community.
For us at the museum, it is important that their experience is not only informative, but also of a warm, welcoming environment.
…they’re so welcoming, everyone is just amazing.” Grade 8 learner, Soneike High
I learnt to not discriminate against other people’s culture because we are all the same and unique.” Grade 6 learner, Meadowridge Primary
The museum’s Cultural Diversity Education Programme offers a broad, curriculum-based educational experience for primary schools, and bespoke programmes for NGOs and other age groups. The school programme covers world religions, Jewish history and culture, and the dangers of prejudice and bullying. Through practical and fun activities, we expose learners to ideas around identity, migration, multiculturalism, social cohesion, personal values and self-esteem.
“Your educational programmess are truly impressive, offering a comprehensive insight into the museum’s collection and the Jewish heritage. Your efforts have made a lasting impact on our students.” Educator, ACJ Phakade Primary
“The dedication of the SAJM team and the different experiences they shared as facilitators was wonderful to witness. The knowledge and passion demonstrated was truly commendable.” Social worker, Orange Art Project
“I enjoyed most the dancing, eating, singing and learning new things. It was fun and exciting.” Grade 6 learner, Cornflower Primary
“Just loved the experience as much as the learners… Well done and thank you!!” Educator, West End Primary
A special effort is made by the museum’s trained education facilitators to make sure that the students enjoy their visit. For many, it will be the only museum outing of their school career. It is important to us that they come away from their visit with a positive experience.
To achieve this we work with teachers, advisors and fellow museum educators, continually incorporating the latest developments in museum education. Our goal is to allow children to learn actively through engaging with the museum’s exhibits and sharing their own stories.
It is a common refrain that schools and NGOs in under-resourced areas cannot easily access museums and other cultural activities. With this in mind, we raise funds to ensure that all related costs (including transport and meals) are not passed on to
the children or schools. They all get to experience the museum free of any cost.
We firmly believe that nobody should be excluded from the opportunity to visit a museum and experience the impact of multi-dimensional learning outside of the classroom. For most learners, a visit to the SAJM challenges their preconceptions and sparks new ways of thinking.
“It was informative, educational and insightful. You have all reinforced my respect and affinity for the Jewish people.” Social worker, Western Cape Department of Social Development
“The Jewish Museum was a place we as Muslims are not supposed to go. But I trusted Sir and I went to the Jewish Museum. In the end I learned something new. I will definitely go back next year.” Grade 6 learner, Parkfields Primary
