Showing gratitude to our supporters
The events of October 7th taught us many things, including how crucial it is that we nurture our relationship with people who support Israel and show acceptance of us as Jews. At a time when so much hatred is directed at Jews all over the globe, let us treasure those who reach out to us and demonstrate their fellowship.
This sentiment was clear during an appreciation event organised by the SA Zionist Federation Cape Council (SAZF CC) in partnership with South African Friends of Israel (SAFI), and WIZO Cape Town, in early December last year. Hosting over 120 friends of the Cape Town Jewish community at a sparkling dinner event, guests came from many different communities in the city. Committed Christians, they demonstrate a love of Israel, giving of their time to take part in numerous activities in support of Jews and of Israel.
Speakers at the event included Heather Blumenthal, Executive Director of the SAZF CC; Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein (via video); Rabbi Osher Feldman, Head of the Rabbinical Association in Cape Town; and Daniel Yackobi, CEO of SA Friends of Israel (SAFI) and the CEO of the SA Israel Chamber of Commerce, and Shelley Trope-Friedman, President of WIZO SA. SAFI played a particularly important role during the evening, since its mission is to unite South African Christians with Israel. Speakers highlighted the wonderful relationship between the local Jewish community and the Christian supporters, and thanked them for their continued endorsement of Jewish life and religion, as well as for their activities in support of Israel.
Through the lighting of candles, each of which highlighted an issue of significance to our community and to Israel, a number of people were recognised for their contribution to promoting Israel and co-operating with supporters across religious lines. Among these people were members of Cape Town’s Jewish community, including Hayley Cohen and Simone Meyerowitz, Adie and Jojo Mallel, and Mathy Joffe, as well as representatives of various Christian groups – Bridges for Peace, the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, and representatives of the Parliament Group, which stands outside Parliament every Friday showing solidarity with Israel.
Once the speeches and candle-lighting were completed, a sumptuous meal was served, with guests enjoying the tastes of the Middle East. And then the party really took off, as guests joined staff of the various Jewish organisations and members of our community for Israeli dancing, led by well known Choni G.
