After a hugely successful inaugural Jewish Literary Festival (JLF) in 2016, we are excited to announce that the next Jewish Literary Festival will be held on Sunday 17 June 2018 in Cape Town.
Following in the spirit and success of book fairs in major Jewish centres around the world, the first JLF, which was sold out before the event, saw 600 book lovers attend over 45 sessions that covered a wide variety of genres including fiction, food, memoir, politics, academia, poetry, journalism and the arts.
The 2018 programme will showcase authors, poets, illustrators, academics, journalists, writers and educators who have a Jewish connection or are engaged with subjects of Jewish interest. Building on the popular events of 2016, we hope to expand the programme even further and introduce leading thinkers on a wide variety of subjects (think art, science, technology and innovation). We will also once again have stimulating and varied programmes for children and young adults.
While the heart of our festival is Jewish-themed, our speakers, events, topics and audience defy narrow categorisation and many of our talks will be of universal interest.
In order to compile a lively and even more interesting and topical programme, we are calling on wordsmiths with a Jewish connection to submit a proposal to present on their writing, launch a new book or discuss their subject. We will consider all submissions but will give preference to newly published work or authors who did not appear at last year’s festival. Prospective presenters are advised that we can only cover some costs for out of town authors as funding is limited.
