What role do YOU play in our community?

Daniel Bloch

I had hoped for a quiet start to 2026. Alas, it was not to be. January and February have once again placed our community firmly in the spotlight with several incidents taking place – each unique in nature, handled differently however with similar outcomes.

Reflecting on recent years, a troubling pattern emerges: Jewish businesses, individuals, schools, synagogues, and communal leaders have all been unfairly targeted – often publicly and aggressively – by anti-Israel activists and antisemitic individuals. These incidents raise two critical questions: how have we responded, and what can we learn?

Organisations like the Cape SAJBD exist to represent and protect our community. But representation does not mean passivity from everyone else. Every community member has a vital role. You are not only our eyes and ears; you have your own voice. At times, that voice must be strong, clear, and unapologetic.

But with that voice comes responsibility and, if used irresponsibly, could have unintended consequences. When we receive reports of antisemitism or discrimination, we investigate thoroughly before acting publicly. Experience has taught us that there are often three sides to every story: the victim, the aggressor, and the truth. Not everything is always black and white and, even if it seems that way, there is always more information that presents itself. The pressure to respond instantly is immense, especially in the age of social media. But speed must never come at the expense of accuracy. Acting prematurely risks damaging reputations unjustly and undermining our credibility. Our responsibility is not to be first – it is to be right.

Swift public action can also have unintended consequences. When someone is publicly accused, the impact extends beyond the individual. Families, livelihoods, and futures may be affected. This does not mean antisemitism should go unchallenged – far from it. But we believe in proportionate responses.

Many incidents stem from ignorance, not hatred. In those cases, education and engagement can achieve far more than public condemnation. Some matters are best resolved quietly, constructively, and effectively behind closed doors. However, there are those whose hatred is deliberate and unrepentant. Those who cross the line knowingly and maliciously will face consequences. We will pursue accountability through every available legal and institutional channel. Antisemitism cannot and will not be tolerated.

So, what, then, is your role?

It is to remain vigilant, responsible, and united. When you encounter antisemitism or discrimination, share that information with us first. Allow us to investigate and act strategically, as you have entrusted us to do. Acting alone or reacting impulsively may unintentionally weaken our collective position.

Our strength has always been our unity, our resilience, and our wisdom. Each of us plays a part in safeguarding the dignity, safety, and future of our community. Sometimes, the pen truly is mightier than the sword. ●
