Obsessive checking of expert weather prediction websites every few hours, hanging brooms in trees and forks in the soil, fervent praying to the higher power, even jokingly enlisting the help of rabbis in this quest for sunshine seemed to have had no effect as Thursday 5 November dawned.

The heavens opened and hasty relocation of the envisioned outdoor registration area, including the temporary ‘Coffeeright’ pavement café was required. A tad disappointing, but the YAD team soldiered on; nothing was going to hamper the success of this event following three months of dedicated planning of the Annual YAD Corporate Charity Golf event 2009, proudly sponsored by key ‘players’ Macsteel and Stenham.

2009 November

As the south easter begins its reign of discomfort hereabouts, the weather is warming and at long last spring has sprung and spirits are rising.

So begin the end of year plans – the final AGMs, award ceremonies and graduations, some of which will be covered more fully next month.

There are matters that need to be expanded on and ‘signed off’ now, however. The Goldstone Report has been so extensively covered in the national and international press and general media, that there seems to be nothing more that we can add to it, other than allowing the SAJBD National Chairman Zev Krengel the final word.

David’s dream comes true

David Samuels, who turned a dream into
reality.

David had a dream: to provide improved accommodation for the 10 Rosecourt residents, to give them a beautiful Jewish ‘home from home’, to enjoy their lives to their full potential and to be proud of their home. The creation of a third house has given a further 8 residents the opportunity to enjoy supervised living, at its best!

David set about this, obtaining the support of the community and the donors, and together with the Priorities Board and Astra Executive committee, the decision was made to proceed with his dream. The architect and the builder were appointed . David has been project managing the development with absolute dedication, with attention to the smallest detail, and he managed to obtain most of the materials donated or at cost. This turned out to be a fulltime job, and he devoted more than a year of his time, energy and love of the project, assuming the full responsibility of a mammoth task. The residents are thrilled to bits with the outcome, and one, in thanking David, said he has given them “a home, better than Buckingham Palace, and Tuinhuis”!

Cape Council welcomes fresh faces on Board

In a public ballot that closed on 30 September 2009, the following three people were voted onto the Board of Deputies through the postal ballot.

Anna Berkowitz, immediate past chairman of UJW Cape Town Branch and convener of the 2010 International Council of Jewish Women’s Convention, needs no introduction. She has previously served on the Board with distinction as the UJW cooptee. She is an executive member and treasurer of the SA Women in Dialogue, Cape Town Chapter and has a wide ranging social conscience, being involved in many volunteer organisations covering her interests in ABET, Adult Training and Development, prevention of domestic violence against women and children, elderly abuse, politics and prevention of cruelty to animals. She has also served on the Kerem Pre-Primary and Herzlia Primary, Middle and High School PTAs.

2009 October

We are now well and truly in 5770 and we start the cycle once again. This issue, while relatively subdued compared to its 64-page predecessor, probably has as much text and editorial.

The recent historic national Board of Deputies conference drew top international Jewish leaders who shared global perspectives, another major presence being SA President Jacob Zuma. This is well covered, with an additional fascinating piece on the Middle East by Hagai Segal – his penultimate, unfortunately, for this publication.

The destructive force of hate speech

Hate speech was an assault on the purposes of freedom of speech and should be excluded from its ambit, said the Honourable Irwin Cotler at a breakfast meeting held under the auspices of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (Cape Council) at Café Riteve on Wednesday 26 August.

John Copelyn, CEO of Hosken Consolidated Investments (HCI) Limited, inspired his audience at a YAD business breakfast sponsored by Investec, with a message of optimism about the country’s future, saying there were “great opportunities” ahead. He said this belief, however, was not always shared in the business community.

A voluntary subscription of R450 per year is requested to help cover costs.

The Chronicle includes local organisational and social news (including family announcements and photographs of simchas), editorial material, commentary on local and international issues and stories of interest. Advertising includes both commercial and classifieds.
