Speed Networking sparks business connections across communities

ORT SA CAPE JET, in collaboration with ORT SA and its AEDF (Astron Energy Development Fund) Isihlangu Programme, hosted a dynamic Business Speed Networking Event

Designed to foster meaningful connections between entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners from diverse backgrounds, industries and communities, the morning proved to be a high-energy, high-impact gathering.

An opportunity to ‘Connect & Grow’ the event drew individuals eager to expand their professional circles, share ideas, and unlock new opportunities. With a dynamic one-on-one networking format, each participant had the chance to engage directly with a wide range of businesses in a structured yet informal setting – allowing for genuine conversations, idea exchange, and even the start of potential partnerships.

ORT SA CAPE JET’s Nicole Friend explains that a focus was on connecting entrepreneurs from different communities who would not normally have the opportunity to interact. “We specifically partnered with the Isihlangu Programme because it supports a different, diverse demographic of entrepreneurs, which allowed for really meaningful engagements between many different cultures and communities.” The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One attendee shared, “It was a really good event and worth attending. I met people I wouldn’t normally approach at a typical networking function.

Many highlighted the refreshing format, diversity of businesses, and the meaningful nature of the conversations. One participant said, “The personal connections, the stories shared – that’s what stood out.” One business owner commented, “It was extremely slick. The timekeeping and structure led to maximum interaction, which was exactly the goal.”

This event is part of ORT SA CAPE JET’s broader mission to empower small businesses by providing support, mentorship, and connection – and reflects ORT SA’s vision to promote inclusive economic growth across South Africa. It also exemplifies the power of building bridges between communities through shared professional purpose.

Following the success of this first speed networking session, businesses can look forward to more opportunities for connection and growth. As one participant concluded: “Getting to know people from a completely different community – that was the real value. The energy was amazing.” ●
